Fall is approaching and this means that pumpkins will be everywhere. Children love to go and pick their own pumpkins and explore with all the fun things to do with pumpkins. Here are some great ideas for toddler and pre-school age children to learn a new song, play a pumpkin game and make a pumpkin apple bake. We hope you enjoy some of our ideas and check back for more craft ideas for Halloween.
5 Little Pumpkins
5 little pumpkins sitting on a gate
The first one said "Oh my! It's getting late!"
The second one said, "There are witches in the air!"
The third one said, "But we don't care."
The fourth one said, "Let's run, let's run."
The fifth one said, "It's only Halloween Fun."
Then woooo went the wind, and out went the light, and five little pumpkins rolled out of sight.
Pass the Pumpkin
This game will help reinforce colors, and all you need is a plastic pumpkin bucket (a trick-or-treat Jack-o-Lantern), some crayons, some music, and a few friends.
Put various colored crayons in to the pumpkin bucket.
Have the children sit in a circle.
Turn on the music and have the children pass around the pumpkin.
When the music stops, the child who has the bucket then pulls out a crayon and tells the rest of the group what color they chose. If the child is right, s/he keeps the crayon. If the child is incorrect, the crayon goes back in to the bucket.
The music begins and the pumpkin continues around the circle.
Play until you run out of crayons.
Pumpkin - Apple Bake
Most children have the opportunity to taste pumpkin in a pie or in bread. Here is a recipe that uses the pumpkin as an edible baking dish.
You will need:
1 small pumpkin (suitable for baking)
chopped apples
raisins
cranberries (optional)
sugar
cinnamon
Here is what you do:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Cut off the top of the pumpkin and scoop out seeds.
Mix chopped apples, raisins, cranberries sugar and cinnamon.
Pour the mixture into the pumpkin and dot it with butter.
Replace the top of the pumpkin
Bake it on a cookie sheet for about 1 1/2 hours.
When the pumpkin has cooled, scoop out some of the pumpkin along with each serving of the apple mixture.
