Helping Seniors Get Wired

At the age of 65, Myrna Arin would have been forgiven spending her time traveling with her husband Ted between Florida, San Diego and London visiting with family and friends and playing a bit of golf in between.  Instead, after retiring from a rewarding career with the U.S. Department of Treasury and PricewaterhouseCoopers, Myrna, a New York resident has re-entered the workforce to bring to life a unique business concept that focuses on positively affecting the wellness of older adults through the use of low cost technologies, awareness and lifelong learning programs

Working with her youngest daughter Risa, who conceived of the business concept in 2003, the duo launched SmartSolutionPartners LLC (
http://www.sspdirect.com/), an innovative company that focuses on contributing to the wellness of older adults by helping seniors to "get wired" and take advantage of the interactive and social elements of the Internet.  For years research has concluded that a key ingredient to healthy aging is staying active physically and as importantly mentally. "The Internet", Myrna hails, "is an excellent, low cost medium that allows all of us to stay connected and engaged with friends and family regardless of how geographically dispersed or mobile we are."

Combining easier to use products, like a large print, high contrast keyboard and awareness with life-long learning events, SSP's team is getting many Adult Living Community and Community Center Directors excited about the positive impact computers and the Internet can have on the wellness of their members.  Myrna recently spoke at the 92nd Street Y in Manhattan, NY where she received an incredibly warm reception and inspired many of the attendees to go online.  One of next goals is to reach out to homebound seniors working with organizations like Meals on Wheels.

"Most people don't even realize that there are options available that make online living accessible, easy and enjoyable, says Risa. SSP's products and services available at www.SSPDirect.com offer 50+ computer users computer accessories that optimize their computer area to address typical changes in vision, mobility and posture.  Also available at www.SSPDirect.com is a community where we publish our visitor's online success stories, share best practices and favorite interactive web sites, recommend FREE online learning sites, as well as offer an opportunity to join the SSP family.

Started in 2003, Myrna and Risa (who has been working in the technology industry for the past 14 years) launched SSP as a way to help older adults keep active and involved whether they are living alone or within an adult living community.  One of the biggest challenges Myrna saw as her mother aged was increased loneliness, isolation and as a result disorientation as we all lived our hectic lives.   "If we can help at least one family stay more in touch, it will all be worth it", said Myrna.
